France, Spain, Italy... India? India isn’t somewhere we tend to automatically think of when we’re trying to decide on a great holiday destination, but why not? The weather’s great, the food is delicious, the culture is fascinating, and the landscape is so diverse that it’s almost impossible to become bored. Whether it’s the breathtaking Kerala coastline or the bustling streets of Mumbai, we know it’s a bit of a cliche but India really does have something for everyone. Including you!
Some of the most incredible holiday destinations in India are found around the Kerala backwaters in Southern India. Consider Munroe Island for its cool coconut farms, Alleppey for its impressive architecture, and Kozhikode for that big city atmosphere. Even the backwaters are a major tourist attraction in themselves, with freshwater lakes and saltwater rivers that span 560 miles.
Travelling to India can be a bit of a shock to the system - things are a little different than back home, which is why it’s important to keep yourself safe and healthy. If you’re in the more rural areas, carry water purification tablets and drink bottled water only, to reduce the risk of getting poorly. It’s a good idea to wear insect repellent, especially in the summer. Remember - getting ill in India is unlikely, but you don’t want to take the risk. After all, being cooped up in your hotel means you won’t be out seeing the sights and marvelling at nature, and that’s what India’s all about!
There’s no need to worry about visas for India as you can stay for up to 30 days as a tourist. Getting in is simple - there are four ‘gateway’ airports in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai, and even flights to some smaller airports in Goa and Kochi. Air India and British Airways are the main carriers for direct flights from London, although you may be able to secure a better price by connecting in Dubai. And don’t forget cruise ships - Royal Caribbean and Cunard offer two-week trips between Singapore and Dubai, with overnight stops in Kochi, which is known for its picturesque skyline and colonial charm. Getting to this amazing country isn't the difficult part - deciding which aspect to experience is much harder!
